catacombs!

So, I got Sarah's excellent photos from her. This and the next several blog posts are due to her great photography. She gave me permission to use whatever I want. Thanks Sarah!

Sarah wanted to go to the catacombs while she was here. It was the only thing we waited in line for the whole time she visited, and one of the only things I've ever waited in line for the whole time I've been in Paris which isn't bad. We both agreed afterward that it was well worth it.

It's a cemetery, sort of, way deep underground in Paris. The bones were arranged there very meticulously at the end of the 1700s. Cemeteries in the city were so saturated at that time that it was necessary to find something else to do with remains, so they had this idea to put them in old used up mines/quarries way down under the city. And let me tell you, it was something else. Sarah was taking photos when we were first underground, as was everyone, but after awhile we both started feeling so strange that she stopped that and we were really just ready to get out of there. We both definitely felt some sort of energy or weirdness around us. The place is big. It goes on and on and on. There are a lot of bones down there. Reputedly, Marie Antoinette and Robespierre, lawyer star of the French Revolution, are mixed in somewhere with everyone else. Which I found very interesting due to a recent obsession with all things French Revolution. So, here are some photos from before we got too freaked out.
